No council meeting this week — but bids are open for new signals at two Center Street corners, and two November hearings are set.

THE HERALD ✦ DEER PARK

This Week

A quiet week at City Hall — and two corners on Center Street about to change. No council meeting is posted for this week. But on Wednesday the city opened bids to replace the old signals hung on cables at Center and 4th and Center and 8th, and it has posted notice of two hearings in early November.

This week: what the signal job covers, where crashes happen on city streets, and the dates to put on your calendar.

No council or board meeting is posted for October 12–18. The city’s Legistar calendar, checked Sunday afternoon, shows nothing after last Tuesday. Council’s standard schedule is the first and third Tuesdays at 7:30 p.m., which makes Tuesday, October 20 the next regular date. That agenda isn’t posted yet. One caution: last Tuesday’s agenda was posted for 5:30 p.m., not 7:30 — go by the time on the posted agenda.

Last Tuesday’s votes aren’t on the record yet. The October 6 agenda carried the cast-iron waterline replacement (phase 1), the Georgia Avenue pavement job and the Durant Lift Station design contract. Minutes aren’t posted, so we can’t tell you what passed. We will when they are.

Your move: to speak at a council meeting, register in Council Chambers before it starts — by 7:25 p.m. for a 7:30 meeting. You get 3 minutes. Planning to speak on Red Bluff? The P&Z preliminary report is open for inspection; ask the City Secretary’s office, 281-479-2394.

Mapping Our Community: Where the Crashes Are

New signals at two Center Street corners is a good reason to look at where crashes actually happen on the streets Deer Park owns — not the freeway, which belongs to the state.

1,730
crashes on city
streets, 2021–25

30
killed or seriously
injured

44%
of city crashes at
intersections (2015–24)

The Council on Local Relations record, built from TxDOT’s crash database, counts 1,730 crashes on Deer Park’s own streets from 2021 to 2025: 5 fatal and 30 in which someone was killed or seriously injured. Over a different window, 2015–2024, it finds 5,065 crashes in the city’s jurisdiction, and 2,211 of them (44%) were intersection-related. SH-225 is counted separately: 81 people killed or seriously injured on the whole corridor in five years.

The lens worth keeping: the record reads a crash pattern as information about how a street is designed, not only about who was at fault. It doesn’t break the numbers down by corner, and it doesn’t say why the city picked 4th and 8th. That’s a fair question for the city: what the crash history at these two corners shows, and whether the new design slows turning cars for people on foot.

Deer Park Animal Hospital

Deer Park Animal Hospital has cared for the town's pets since 1972. Dr. Dale Lonsford has owned it since 1978, and today he shares ownership with his daughter, Dr. Charmel Rodick, and Dr. Dominique Gras.

It has been accredited by the American Animal Hospital Association since 1983, and it's a Certified Cat Friendly Practice.

In 2019 it left its old home on Center Street for a new building on East Boulevard of more than 8,000 square feet, about 3,000 more than before.
