Pearland Herald Issue 1

THE HERALD ✦ PEARLAND

This Week

Welcome to the first Pearland Herald. Every Sunday: what your city council is about to decide, what’s happening around town, and one thing you can do about it — sourced, local, and short enough to finish with your coffee.

Good timing for a first issue. Pearland turned 132 on Thursday, and tomorrow night the council takes its final votes on next year’s budget and tax rate.

Mapping Our Community: What Monday Means for Your Bill

Here’s the rare tax story with a short answer. Using the city’s own numbers for the median homestead:

$2,385.94
city tax, median home,
current rate

$2,385.52
at the proposed
rate

$2,423.51
at the no-new-
revenue rate

The median home’s appraised value went up slightly (from $378,721 to $379,925), and the rate comes down by about the same amount — so the city’s share of the bill is essentially unchanged. Your own bill depends on your own appraisal and exemptions, and the school district and county set their own rates.

The lens worth keeping: 70.6% of the General Fund is people — police, fire, public works, parks. That’s normal for a city, and it means the real long-term question isn’t this year’s penny. It’s whether the tax base Pearland builds each year grows fast enough to pay those people, and maintain every street and pipe it adds, without the rate having to climb later.

Your move: check your own appraisal and exemptions with your county appraisal district, then bring one question Monday: “What does the 2% budget growth pay for?”

Central Texas Style BBQ, Pearland

Central Texas Style BBQ — since 1969

In 1969, Diana LeClere, newly arrived from Cuba, stepped into the kitchen of what became her life’s work. More than fifty years later it calls itself one of Pearland’s oldest continuously operating restaurants — hickory-smoked meats from family recipes, walls full of family memories. In early 2024 the Texas Historical Commission named it a Texas Treasure Historic Business.

✦  Trivia Question

Pearland is named for its pear orchards. What wiped most of them out? (Answer at the bottom.)

✦  Quote of the Day

“Town meetings are to liberty what primary schools are to science.” — Alexis de Tocqueville

✦  Secret Little Hack

Pothole, broken curb, something dead in the road? The Connect2Pearland app (iOS and Android) sends the report to the city with a photo and GPS pin — and lets you track it until it’s fixed. Streetlight out? That one goes to CenterPoint, not the city.

HAR’s September 2026 snapshot still calls Pearland a seller’s market, but it’s balanced close to the line — nearly four months of inventory and listings level with last year. Your move: check your appraisal before it sets next year’s bill.

Growth & Learning

Here’s a budget lesson for kids with real numbers. Pearland spends 70.6 cents of every General Fund dollar on people. Ask your kids to guess first, then show them. Then ask: if the city grows by one new neighborhood, what else has to grow with it — firefighters, streets, pipes? That’s how a city budget actually works. More at unrivaledacademy.com.
