Monday night at City Hall is about plate cameras and a rezoning. At 6 p.m., Planning & Zoning hears two zone-change requests, including 6.7 acres on Hillhouse Road that would go from commercial to single-family homes. At 6:30, council holds a workshop where the Police Department explains its Flock license plate readers: 31 city cameras, 30 days of stored data, and who is allowed to search it. Council also meets in closed session at 3 p.m.

Two housekeeping notes: last week we gave the wrong date for the Library Board, and the Visit Pearland board now shows a new date. Both are in Liberty Watch.

Monday, October 19, 6 p.m. — Planning & Zoning Commission, PEDC Boardroom, Suite 350, City Hall, 3519 Liberty Dr. Two public hearings:

Monday, October 19, 6:30 p.m. — City Council special workshop, Council Chambers. One item: a presentation on Police use of Flock license plate readers. More in Mapping Our Community. Earlier, at 3 p.m., council holds a special meeting that goes straight into closed session on board and commission appointments and on the sale, purchase or lease of real property.

What happened last Monday? The city’s portal still lists only the agenda packets for the Oct 12 council meeting and the joint council and P&Z workshop. No minutes or results were posted as of Sunday afternoon, so we are not reporting how council voted on the Turkey Trot permit or the fire department purchases. We will when the record is posted. Next up: a joint council and P&Z workshop on Oct 26 at 4:30 p.m. (not yet posted) and the regular council meeting that night at 6:30.

Corrections: Last week we said the Library Board meets Oct 16 at 7 p.m. That date came from the agenda PDF. The city’s meeting page lists the meeting as Thursday, Oct 15, and marks it canceled; no new date is posted. We also listed the Visit Pearland Advisory Board for Wednesday, Oct 14. The city’s calendar now shows it on Wednesday, Oct 21, 10 a.m., at the Sleep Inn & Suites, 1908 Country Place Pkwy. Its agenda: turfing the softball fields at Centennial Park and the Cultural Arts Master Plan.

Mapping Our Community: 112 Plate Cameras, Four Owners

Bar chart: 31 city, 48 HOA, 31 private and 2 school district Flock cameras in Pearland

Source: Pearland PD slide, Oct 19 council workshop packet

Flock cameras photograph license plates and vehicle features, then check plates against police “hotlists” (stolen cars, missing persons, local alerts). Per the Police Department’s slides for Monday, Pearland signed on in early 2022. Today it counts 31 city cameras, 48 on HOA property, 31 at private businesses and 2 at school district sites, which adds up to 112.

slide (10/12/25)

The rules, as the city describes them: every search must list an offense type, a case number and a reason; users sign in with two-step login; officers, dispatchers and crime analysts only; audits that began in 2023 are now monthly. The slides say the system does no facial recognition, cannot search for people and gives no live stream. The city turned off nationwide sharing in September 2026 but still shares statewide. The city also notes that plate misreads can cause false alerts.

The lens worth keeping: the results slide is dated Oct 12, 2025, a year old. Ask what the numbers look like now, how many audit reviews found a search that did not meet policy, and who sees the HOA and private cameras’ data. The workshop is discussion only, with no vote on the agenda.

Antiques, Beads & Crafty People

The name was a hedge. Helen Roberts and her daughter, Chawnia Meeks, opened the shop in 2002 not knowing which part would catch on, and as Roberts told Community Impact in 2019, “the beads have taken over.”

Today the shop calls itself a full-service bead shop on East Broadway: beading supplies, custom designs, rosaries and repairs, trunk shows, and small-group classes. Its site lists a Basic Beading class at $25 with supplies included, and a $10 memory-wire bracelet class. Call to reserve a spot.

Central Texas Style BBQ

Diana LeClere came from Cuba and started in the kitchen at this Broadway Street barbecue joint in 1969. Her family bought it in 1970. Today her daughter, Ruth LeClere, and grandson, Devon Nixon, run it, and the restaurant says four generations have worked there.

Hickory-smoked brisket, sausage, ribs, chicken and turkey anchor the menu, with Cuban touches such as congri, Spanish rice and a mojo-style sauce. The state has recognized it as a Texas Treasure Historic Business, according to the restaurant and Visit Pearland.

✦  Trivia Question

Pearland counted 37,640 residents in 2000. To the nearest thousand, how many did it count in 2020? (Answer at the bottom.)

✦  Secret Little Hack

Want to speak at a Pearland meeting? Read the agenda’s Citizen Comments section: it asks for three minutes per person, or five if you speak for a group, and says it is not a question-and-answer session. Write your point in three sentences, bring one number from the packet, and read it out. Monday’s workshop agenda is here.

September’s median sold price was $382,000, a hair under last September’s $385,000 and up from $366,500 in August. The 107 homes sold matched last September; the typical sold home took 25 days, versus 24 a year ago. Single-family figures from HAR, as of September 2026. Your move: a rezoning hearing like Hillhouse Road’s is where a change in what can be built nearby starts, so read the notice and ask the question early.

Growth & Learning

Council asks citizens to keep comments to three minutes. Try it at home this week: pick something in Pearland your kids would change — a crosswalk, a park, a library hour — and have them make the case in three minutes, with one fact and one ask. Then look up who decides it. Kids who practice speaking up grow into adults who show up. More at unrivaledacademy.com.
